The thrill of the hunt: A Christmas Snapshot

I’m not much of a shopper, so December 24th was pretty interesting when I was a single mom of five kids.

About noon I’d jump in my minivan and head for the mall, fighting traffic all the way. I’d dash through the doors waving my kids’ Christmas lists, grab every sale item that remotely qualified, throw the loot into my van, then zip over to Wegman’s to splurge on exotic food for our Christmas Eve feast.

Back home, we’d set the table with our Christmas tartan tablecloth and holly-bedecked dishes from the Dollar Store, then deck ourselves for the Christmas Eve church service. We’d walk through the cold night and file up to the balcony of the beautiful stone church where we’d hear the precious story retold and sing carols by candlelight. Hearts full, we’d return to our feast, sing more carols, and read Luke Chapter 2 and “The Night Before Christmas.” Finally, I’d tuck them all snug in their beds.

Then the wrapping would begin, followed at last by five stockings tied in order on the banister, an orange in each toe. I was lucky to get to bed before sunrise.
